Sydhavn Skole – Competition Winner

LOCATION: Copenhagen South – Denmark
CONTENT: School, 9,500 m²
Cadman produced the competition visualizations for Sydhavn Skole as visual lead and illustrator. The built project is internationally recognized and has received multiple awards, including WAN Education Award 2016. JJW project page: Skolen i Sydhavnen.
Schoolyard as a Public Room
The schoolyard is open and designed as more than a classic courtyard: an extra learning, stay, and activity space that continues to attract local residents after school hours.
Terraces and Roof Activity
Terraces, grass, and activating roof spaces support physical activity, especially for older students. The upper levels culminate in a dedicated roof terrace designed for movement and social life.
A New Landmark by the Water
The school functions as an activity-promoting meeting point for the district, adapted both aesthetically and programmatically to its waterfront location and civic role.
“Byen ind på skolen – skolen ud i byen”
The project is conceived as an active civic anchor, where learning spaces and outdoor areas are integrated into everyday city life.
Public, Semi-Public, Private
The building is organized with a clear hierarchy from public to more private areas. The ground floor works as a combined aula and “bytorv”, with outward-facing functions that can serve the neighborhood.
